How Is a Breast Lift Performed?

For a lot of women, having sagging breasts that are lacking in volume is an embarrassing problem that makes them want to keep their bodies hidden. Women desire youthful breast that have volume and aesthetically pleasing contours.

Although it is normal for breasts to sag over a period of time due to aging, some find it difficult to accept these changes. But sagging breasts can be lifted and reshaped to suit one’s desired appearance through breast lift surgery.

What Is A Breast Lift Surgery?

As a woman gets older, her breasts change. They lose their elasticity and firmness. The ligaments that support the breasts stretch as they become fuller and heavier. This stretching contributes to sagging during pregnancy and lasts even afterwards.

Gravity is another common cause of sagging breasts as women get older. Over the course of time, they’ll droop down and lose their shape and volume. The nipples and areola will eventually point downward and elongate out of proportion. They start to feel unsupported as they fall below the breast crease.

A breast lift, also called a Mastopexy, It is a surgical procedure designed to change the shape of the breast by modifying its size, contour, and elevation . It raises the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissues.

The Breast Lift Procedure

Breast lift is a surgical treatment to restore the contours of a woman’s breast. It starts with a consultation with a plastic surgeon who will determine whether the patient is an ideal candidate for the surgery.

The patient’s medical history, present medical conditions, medications, allergies, etc. are all reviewed during a consultation. The treatment plan is largely based on the patient’s desired goals. It includes the treatment procedure, the incision site, and the desired size and elevation.

The plastic surgeon may also suggest a baseline mammogram before the procedure and another a few months after the operation to verify the changes in the breast tissue. The patient will be asked to stop smoking and avoid certain medications like blood thinners and herbal supplements.

The surgery is commenced after an anesthetic is applied to help you remain comfortable during the entire process. There are different techniques that are used to remove breast skin to reshape the tissues. The one your surgeon uses for you will depend on your specific needs.

The treatment begins with the surgeon cleaning the treatment area and marking the incisions. There are three incision patterns:

  • Around the areola.
  • Around the areola and vertically down from the areola to the breast crease.
  • Around the areola, vertically down from the areola to the breast crease, and horizontally along the breast crease.

Depending on the technique decided on your plastic surgeon will choose among these three options. The underlying tissue is then lifted and reshaped, the nipple and areola are repositioned, any excess breast skin is removed, and the enlarged areola are normalized. The incision lines are closed after reshaping the breast.

Post-surgery, dressings or bandages are applied to the incisions. A surgical support bra is recommended until the incisions heal. A drainage tube is usually placed under the skin to drain excess fluid or blood. The surgeon provides post-surgery instructions to be carried out to avoid any unnecessary side effects.
